‘the shifting definitions of autism have particularly affected those with profound autism and their caretakers. His substack writing (and I assume his upcoming book, All in Your Head, which I have pre-ordered) often discusses how the autism label used to be applied mostly to those who were very significantly affected by autism before they were supplanted by more palatable high functioning autistics. He claims that these people with ASD 1 (or maybe not even that) were attempting to rebrand autism as a fun, quirky asset whose only downside is the negative stereotypes imposed on them by an ableist world. It is plainly true that people like me have supplanted, and spoken over those who are more profoundly affected….’
