If he himself is unable to raise the sum he has to put up as bail, then he will not be able to appeal. But then he would have to pay in any case. So he needs to either have to borrow the money or sell something valuable.

But what could be more valuable than the prospect of a future president making any decision he wants for the person who helped him out of his financial jam?
