‘A horrible recipe can be much more than something that didn’t turn out the way you wanted. The website Don’t Cook That gives us 144 recipes that were actually printed in recipe books between 1831 and 1929, but should never be tried for various reasons. Some of them use ingredients we know now to be poisonous, like making expired meat good again by soaking it in potash or exposing it to hydrogen chloride gas. Others give preparation methods that are not at all safe, like preserving butter in salt brine. Of course, you’ll find ingredients that can no longer be purchased as food, like a refreshing drink that calls for sulphuric acid from 1906. And some of these recipes are just plain gross or weird, like the peacock cooked and then re-wrapped in its own skin and feathers. Oh, it’s not safe, either. Yeah, you can learn how to cook an opossum, too, but don’t…’
