I think part of the problem is that the Real Science keeps shifting too — avoid all fat, then no there are healthy fats; margarine is better than butter, no it’s worse; avoid salt, or maybe only if you have heart disease; avoid processed foods, even if your life is rushed and stressed. Trying to keep straight current recommendations, let alone follow them, has made people feel frustrated with Official Advice and throw up their hands about trying to Eat Healthy. It makes current fads seem no more ridiculous or less grounded…

I have long felt that the greatest health impact of diet issues is the ill effect of worrying too much about your diet.

well, it’s better to be trying to Shift Healthier than to be trying to lose weight, which is how most people are focused. but you’re probably right that both just lead to focusing too much on food (and/or worrying about it). all this is amplified when you have kids and feel you must Feed Them Right as well as Teach Good Food Habits. whew.
