I wondered about the methodology and the small print reveals why this is not to be trusted: it’s based on a survey and/or a survey of *congregations*. Other research has shown that the majority of people in the US are not members of any officially recognized congregation. So this is really a map of minorities within a minority, those who for whatever reason have registered as members of a registered body. (Leaving aside the fact that some belief systems cannot meet the criteria to be so registered, such as having a central organizing body.) That makes its appearance less surprising.
