Standards for both truth and tolerance are highly cultural, even predominantly cultural. That’s one more reason to do the hard work of listening to and coming to understand intolerance. It is at or beyond the edge of the listener’s culture and will illustrate the edges is especially clear ways. However, the clarity a stranger has in a strange land is often considered strange, outlandish, threatening, and as someone become tolerant of intolerance s’he may be rejected at home. Literature is full of stories about that.
