This quote spells out one of my primary problems with christianity: the notion that the physical world is evil and must be resisted every minute of our lives.
It’s also the explanation of my love/hate relationship with some of Wagner’s operas. Tannhauser and Parsifal contain hours of music that I absolutely love but I detest the stories so much that they make for a very mixed experience. Both basically promote the idea that a man who even once enjoys the sensory pleasure of the physical world is damned unless a woman agrees to die on his behalf. Yuck.
