I am not a resident of the state of NM, but I hope Governor Richardson vetoes the bill, and that the residents of the state of NM realize the importance of having death penalty for its deterrent effects.

The “deterrent effect” of the death penalty is a myth. Compare the murder rates in states with and without capital punishment and see for yourself.

It’s been reported that the cost factor swung the vote in favor of abolition. But I wonder if some of the people who voted for abolition wanted to anyway, and just needed the cover?
What many people don’t realize is how much more unjust our Federal Criminal Justice System became after 1996 when Clinton signed the AEDPA (Anti-terrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act) which eviscerated Habeus Corpus in Federal Death Penalty Appeals.
This is welcome news.
