The New York Times did an analysis of dog license data for the city. It is not surprising that it found that New Yorkers own dogs for different reasons depending on their demographics, or that the data shows “a city of neighborhoods” (as the city’s commissioner of health reflects in the article), i.e. continued ghettoization. As the Times points out, the canine census data suffers by only reflecting licensed dogs, by one estimate only one in five of the total dog population of the city. It seems likely to me that the extent of cooperation with the requirement to license your dog would vary by demographic segment of the city’s population as well, and hence vary by dog breed. I would venture to say, for instance, that more of the labrador retrievers are registered than the Dobermans or pit bulls.
