Your approach makes perfect sense to me. First understand the world-view of another culture, then see if it's insufficient. And insufficient for what purposes? Most cultures evolve to extract maximum happiness from their environment, however punishing. Maybe one day ours will catch up!

Awesome post, so glad it's become a FMH tradition! I was in New London, NH on Halloween and watched what appeared to be most of the residents and their children walk down to the main street of town to trick or treat at all the local businesses and the fire station. Looked like a wonderful town tradition and I bet all those little ones will remember it all their lives!

So most of the young people who loved the Harry Potter books won't be sharing them with kids of their own someday, eh? Doubtful.

The hardcover bestseller may well disappear, but since I don't read them now, I won't miss it. I'll still be reading novels, though.

I think the novel is experiencing more competition, but as an immersive experience, it can't be beat. I have trouble finding the time, but no trouble paying attention. Good stories, good writing will survive.

Why is anyone taking the undocumented origin of this story and giving it any credence? Discussing the phenomenon of suggestion is one thing, but referring to the precipitating event in January 2006 as an actual occurrence is beyond me. Does anyone know the "well-known psychiatrist" in the original fiction?

I don't actually find this man's face to be generic or commonplace but rather distinctive, and the dreamers comment on hiis appearance being unusual. However, I do agree, there are mundane explanations for most paranormal claims. I follow alot of the paranormal field for two reasons. IAs a student of the human mind, I am endlessly fascinated and amused by how easy it is for us to deceive and delude ourselves, to see evidence of what it is we wish to believe. But I am fascinated by the residue of seemingly inexplicable phenomena that point to the limitations of our current explanatory paradigms. The 'paranormal' is probably just the 'normal' that has yet to be explained. That being said, in this case the story goes that it was not, at least initially, the shrink asking the patient, "Have you seen this man in your dreams?" or even "Have you seen this man?", but rather the patients noticing the sketch and offering unbidden that the man had visited them in their dreams.

Call me crazy, but this ain't nuttin' but a website based on an unsubstantiated and quite possibly fictional anecdote. Stan's mundane explanation may be just what the perpetrators are endeavoring to demonstrate.

Or perhaps there's a profit motive lurking here?

The Canadian military is, in fact, doing research into how to "read" a person's face electronically to detect hostile intent and/or fatigue:

“The objective is the design and development of a decision support system through the fusion of biometrics signals for behavioural diagnostic applications. The design and development of the system will be completed over 3 phases. The system will be based on the automatic processing and the classification of data stemming mainly from Electroencephalogram (EEG), Electrocardiogram (ECG) recordings and tracking of 3D stereoscopic facial characteristics. This processing should provide the integrated system capability, including vital signs, stereoscopic cameras and EEG, to quantify and provide automated diagnosis of the stressors that may affect the operational readiness of Canadian Forces (CF) operators and identify behavioural patterns with the aim of detecting hostile inten(t).”

Next question: how would you feel about a machine reading your face and deciding you're too tired to work?

A bit more on this here http://is.gd/4HkgW if you're interested.

I agree, Stan. This would be more impressive if each patient worked with a different sketch artist and we ended up with a lot of independent sketches that all looked alike. The power of suggestion element in showing the picture leaves room for plenty of doubt.

I saw this a couple weeks ago. The web site has a page of theories, but I suspect the explanation is more mundane: something about features are generic enough that a lot of people recognize it, or more mundane: suggestion. If your psychologist asks you "Have you seen this man in your dreams?" you're much more likely to say yes than if he asked you to describe the most common person in your dreams and have the results be recognizable very similar to this.

Your thoughts, Eliot?

The exercise of writing in E-prime can lead to enlightenment. It can also lead to self-deception. Many strategies turn up for hiding the concept of "is-ness" in sentences that do not contain the forbidden word. For example, the verb "to exist" requires great care to avoid making it a substitution for "to be".

Robert Anton Wilson came up with a simple strategy for using the forbidden word in a way that retains the spirit of E-Prime: always preface any sentence that contains it with a phrase like "It seems to me that..." or "In the opinion of some scientists...".

A good exercise for the astute reader involves finding all the ways the "to be" concept got buried in the apparent E-Prime of this post. The really astute (or those with tons of time on their hands) should take care to phrase their analysis in E-Prime.

Nice post. A minor correction—Korzybski did not found the International Society for General Semantics. He did found the Institute of General Semantics in 1938.

As you rightly point out, E-Prime arose from his 'thinking' but he himself did not advocate the radical excision of all forms of the verb 'to be' from the English language. The suggestion to do so and the E-Prime program came later from one of his students, David Bourland.

Does this study measure actual physical structure or facial expression?

If you spend all day scowling or all day smiling eventually your face will naturally relax into scowling or smiling, is that what people are picking up?

For what it's worth, most people's first impression of me is that I'm aloof and, I guess you could say, intimidating. In my case, though, I'm pretty sure it's more personality than looks: I'm an introvert and don't give off all of the expected social cues when meeting people.

In combination with the zombie story above, this certainly shows how weird science is getting and how thin the line between science and science fiction is getting (and, of course, the line between reality and parody as well).

My partner's comment on this one was to ask, "Is the Higgs Boson doing this in all the universes or just in ours?"

maybe there are other markers, such as things that only develop at a certain developmental age?
That was cool. It was posted in an interesting Ask MeFi question thread: Are we too old to trick-or-treat

I was amazed at the large number of people who answered 'yes' to the question. It never occurred to me that there are such strict cultural expectations about trick-or-treating.

Hey blog-twin,

Yeah, my numbers have steadily decreased over recent years as well. (And it's very rare nowadays that any post garners more than 1 or 2 comments.)

I'm sure a lot of it is just people moving onto greener, or more consistently-updated, pastures -- there's a lot more options in the blogosphere than there was 10 years ago.

That being said, I've also gotten the sense that many of the readers have, yes, moved to RSS feeds. Or, since my posts are now in my Facebook feed, that takes care of a lot of former readers too.

Anyway, keep up the good work, and screw the numbers. :) If we were in it for the readership, I suspect we'd have folded up shop long before the coming 10-year-mark.

This entry was a bit of a shock... I fear you may decide it's not worth the effort.

I can offer one explanation from my own experience. I don't use RSS, but in general, over the past year I find myself doing less daily blog-reading. The problem is overload; once I start, I can pass many enjoyable hours linking around to the multiple ideas to which each interesting blink leads -- too many hours, in fact. As a defense I've cut down somewhat on the number of blogs I follow (mainly, political blogs; I mainly follow TPM now). For the remaining ones, I "concentrate" my reading to fewer days. E.g., your blog is still very high on my list (as it always has been), but I tend to check only 2 or 3 times a week now, whereas in the past I checked several times a day. However, I still read (and appreciate very much) everything you write, but if you gauged my interest from how many hits you got from me, it would seem to decline over the past year.

Follow Me Here is one of the best blogs I know, one of the ones that is dearest to my heart, and it's simply amazing that you have produced such a steady flow of stimulating ideas for so long. I know one day you may get tired of it and stop (as you did a few years ago), but I very much hope that day is still far off.

Right - I have Kohn's book (haven't finished it) and much resonates. But (so far) I have a pretty easy-going kid, too, and it's easy to parent such a child unconditionally.

ACM - you might like Mama-Om -- some interesting ideas on helping kids cope with their feelings (and other aspects of parenting). http://mama-om.blogspot.com/
